In 1930, Crain Communications launched Advertising Age in Chicago. At that time, the two main trade publications that focused on advertising were Printers’ Ink and Advertising & Selling (adage.com). However, neither of these covered news of the industry in any depth. So, Advertising Age was created to be that source for advertising professionals.
Today, Advertising Age “is the leading global source of news, intelligence and conversation for the marketing and media community” (adage.com). The publication covers a variety of topics in the ad world as well as breaking news in the industry
On Monday, May 15, 2017, our class got the opportunity to visit Advertising Age, and it was an amazing experience. We sat down with Ann Marie Kerwin, Editor for Advertising Age, and she gave us all the information we needed to know about the publication, the industry in general, and the agencies we would be visiting in the next two weeks. This was incredibly helpful because it got us thinking about our future visits and helped us come up with questions in advance for those agencies. In addition to this, Ms. Kerwin really had a lot of great advice about finding and applying for jobs in the ad world.
One piece of advise that I know everyone appreciated was that job listings are more like wish lists, so you don’t have to have everything that’s on the list to apply. It seems so simple but it’s immensely helpful advice. That nugget of wisdom will stay with us for the rest of our lives and affect the jobs we decide to go ahead and go for.
Overall, our visit to Advertising Age was amazing. We learned a lot. We had a good time. And we got to know an inspiring person with a passion for advertising. You can’t ask for much more than that.
